Black Friday: What to Add to Your WooCommerce Store to Sell More

The WooCommerce features, payment options and add-ons that lift sales, plus the CPA pricing rules South African..

WooCommerce online store set up for Black Friday with sale prices, a free shipping threshold and buy now, pay later options

Black Friday falls on 27/11/2026 and Cyber Monday on 30/11/2026. For a WooCommerce store, the most useful work happens now, in October, and most of it does not involve buying anything. WooCommerce already includes scheduled sale pricing, coupon rules, free shipping thresholds and cross-sells that many of the stores we audit have never configured. The gains worth chasing are in removing checkout friction, offering the payment methods South African shoppers actually use, and adding a small number of extensions where core genuinely falls short.

That framing matters because Black Friday advice is usually written as a marketing checklist: countdown timers, banners, urgency. Those are the visible part. The stores that do well over the Black Friday period tend to win on mechanics the shopper never consciously notices: a discount that applies without a code, a payment method that does not decline, a delivery cost that appears before the final step rather than at it.

What the Market Looks Like Going Into November

South African online retail is still growing quickly. World Wide Worx’s Online Retail in South Africa 2026 study, released in September, forecasts online sales of around R159 billion this year, up from R130 billion in 2025, with growth of 22.5% and online reaching 10% of total retail on a nominal basis. By comparison, the broader retail market grew by about 4% in the first five months of 2026.

Last year’s Black Friday data shows where that growth concentrates. Peach Payments processed more than 2.69 million transactions worth over R1.86 billion between Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2025, up 93% in Rand value on 2024, with buy now, pay later value up 753% and Apple Pay up 549% from a smaller base. Standard Bank reported card-not-present transactions at 22% of Black Friday weekend volumes, against 12% the year before. Absa saw the average online basket rise 25% to R827.

Two patterns in that data shape everything that follows. First, Black Friday is no longer a day. Absa noted a marginal drop in transaction volumes on the day itself because spending had spread across the surrounding period. Second, the payment mix is shifting fast. Stores that set up a 24-hour flash sale with card payments only are configuring for a version of Black Friday that no longer exists.

Start With What WooCommerce Already Does

Before spending on extensions, use the promotional tools built into WooCommerce core. They are more capable than most store owners realise, and they carry no licence fees, no extra plugin weight and no additional update risk in the busiest weeks of the year.

Scheduled sale prices

Every product can carry a sale price with a start and end date, set under the product’s General tab using the Schedule option. The sale price switches on and off automatically, ending at 23:59 on the end date. This is the cleanest way to run a Black Friday window: load the prices in advance, check them, and let them go live on schedule rather than editing hundreds of products by hand on Thursday night.

Coupons with real rules

Core coupons support percentage, fixed cart and fixed product discounts, minimum and maximum spend, individual use only, exclusion of items already on sale, product and category restrictions, per-coupon and per-customer usage limits, and expiry dates. Coupons can also be scheduled to publish later. A minimum spend coupon is the simplest lever for raising basket size: “R150 off orders over R1,500” gives a shopper a concrete reason to add one more item.

The limitation is that core coupons require the shopper to type a code. Codes create friction and leak to coupon websites. That gap is one of the few places where a paid extension earns its place, covered below.

Free shipping thresholds

The free shipping method can be set to require a minimum order amount, a valid coupon, either, or both, with an option to apply the minimum before or after coupon discounts. In World Wide Worx’s 2026 survey of South African online retailers, shipping fees were the second most cited cause of cart abandonment, named by 51.7% of retailers. A threshold set a little above your average order value converts that objection into an incentive.

Upsells, cross-sells and the On Sale collection

Upsells display on the product page and cross-sells on the cart page, depending on your theme. Both are core features and both are usually left empty. The Product Collection block also includes a ready-made On Sale collection, so a dedicated Black Friday landing page that always shows what is currently discounted can be built without any extra plugin, and stays accurate as scheduled prices switch on and off.

Realistic expectation: configuring these core features properly is a matter of hours, not a development project. If your store has none of them set up, start here before anything else.

Fix the Leaks Before You Pour In Traffic

A promotion multiplies whatever your checkout already does. If the checkout loses shoppers, Black Friday loses more of them, faster, with paid traffic behind them. The World Wide Worx retailer survey is unusually useful here because it asks merchants what is actually causing abandonment.

  • Card declines: cited by 61.2% of retailers, up from 27.9% the year before. Now the most common reason given.
  • Shipping fees: 51.7%.
  • Forced account creation: 43.8%.
  • Checkout too long or complicated: 40.3%.
  • Website or checkout errors: 31.3%.

Read that list as a to-do list. Card declines are mostly outside your control, which is precisely why the answer is more ways to pay rather than fewer. Forced account creation is a setting: allow guest checkout and offer account creation after the order. A long checkout is usually a theme or plugin problem that has accumulated fields nobody needs. Website errors are the subject of the performance section below. The behavioural side of checkout friction is covered in Checkout Psychology and How to Reduce Buyer Friction.

Payment options are now a conversion feature

When a card declines, a shopper with another way to pay, such as instant EFT, a digital wallet or buy now, pay later, can still complete the order. A shopper without one leaves. The same survey found that 54.7% of South African online retailers already offer buy now, pay later, and 36.8% offer digital wallets. If your store offers card and EFT only, it is behind more than half of the retailers surveyed on the single biggest abandonment cause they report.

The practical barrier has dropped. Payfast announced in August 2026 that Payflex buy now, pay later is available at Payfast checkout, letting shoppers pay in two, three or four interest-free instalments while the merchant is paid upfront, less fees. Payfast says existing merchants have been enabled automatically, and where it is switched off it can be turned on under Payment Methods in the Payfast dashboard, with approval taking up to seven working days. PayJustNow and Payflex both also publish WooCommerce plugins on WordPress.org with product-page instalment messaging. Our guide to buy now, pay later for South African ecommerce compares the providers in detail.

Be honest with yourself about what buy now, pay later does. It is commonly sold as a basket-size lever, but PayJustNow’s own published data for early April 2026 showed transaction value up sharply while the average basket was essentially flat, down 0.8%. The stronger case is affordability and conversion: more shoppers able to complete the purchase they came for, especially in a month when many are waiting for payday. Show the instalment amount on the product page, not just at checkout, so the decision is made before the shopper reaches the payment step.

Additions Worth Paying For

Once core is configured and the checkout is clean, a small number of extensions sold on the WooCommerce Marketplace fill real gaps. Prices below are the annual licence prices listed on woocommerce.com in October 2026, for extensions by WooCommerce and third-party developers, in US dollars. Each extension also adds code to maintain, so add only what the promotion actually needs.

ExtensionAnnual price (USD)The gap it fills
Dynamic Pricing$129Automatic quantity and category discounts with no code to type, the main limitation of core coupons.
Product Bundles$79Bundles with their own discount, which lift basket size without discounting best sellers individually.
AutomateWoo$159Abandoned cart emails and follow-ups, which matter more when traffic spikes.
Gift Cards$79Sells gifts for December to shoppers who do not know what the recipient wants, with scheduled delivery dates.
Back In Stock Notifications$59Captures demand on sold-out products instead of losing it. A core equivalent was still experimental in WooCommerce 11.2.

Two judgement calls apply. First, timing: install and test any new extension in October or the first week of November, never in the week of Black Friday. Second, overlap: a store running a third-party discount plugin, a theme with its own sale badges and a core scheduled sale can end up with prices that stack in ways nobody intended. One discount mechanism per promotion is safer than three.

Abandoned cart recovery deserves a specific note. A Black Friday shopper who leaves a cart is often comparing, not abandoning. A well-timed reminder that the price holds until a stated date, sent while the sale is genuinely still running, recovers orders that would otherwise go to whichever store reminded them first. Our article on abandoned cart recovery tactics covers sequencing.

Urgency, Discounts and the Law

This is the section most Black Friday guides leave out, and it is the one that carries real risk for a South African store. The Consumer Protection Act regulates how prices and promotions may be presented, and the National Consumer Commission has previously warned suppliers ahead of Black Friday not to market their deals in a misleading or deceptive way.

Was and now prices

Section 29(b)(iii) of the Consumer Protection Act prohibits marketing that is misleading, fraudulent or deceptive, including in relation to the price and its relationship to any previous price or a competitor’s price. Section 41 prohibits false, misleading or deceptive representations, and section 41(3)(f) specifically lists falsely stating or implying that a specific price advantage exists. A “was R2,499, now R1,499” claim is only as defensible as the evidence that R2,499 was the genuine regular price. Raising regular prices in early November so that the Black Friday discount looks larger is exactly the conduct these sections target.

The practical safeguard is simple: before the sale, export your regular prices with a date, and keep the file. WooCommerce does not keep a history of past prices, so if a regular price is edited, the old value is gone. That dated export may be the only record you have.

Limited stock and limited time

Section 30 deals with bait marketing. You may not advertise goods at a price in a way that misleads consumers about their actual availability, and if you state that stock is limited, you must honour the offer up to those limits. Countdown timers and “only 3 left” messages are fine when they are true. A timer that resets for every visitor, or a stock message that is not connected to real inventory, is a misleading representation, and it is also the kind of thing customers screenshot.

Disclosure still applies at full speed

Section 43 of the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act requires an online store to show, among other things, the full price including delivery costs and taxes, the returns and refunds policy, and the delivery time. Under pressure to launch a sale quickly, delivery cost is the item most often pushed to the last checkout step, which is both a legal gap and the abandonment cause retailers named second most often. Our ECTA section 43 guide lists the full set of required disclosures.

Make Sure the Store Can Carry It

Every feature above is wasted if the store slows down or fails at 10:00 on Black Friday. PayInc, formerly BankservAfrica and the operator of South Africa’s core payments clearing infrastructure, recorded an average of 934 transactions a minute on Black Friday 2025, and its busiest hour for online activity was between 10:00 and 11:00. Your store does not need to handle volumes on that scale, but it does need to handle its own peak, which may be many times a normal day.

Three checks matter most. Confirm your hosting resource limits with your host now; WooCommerce’s own Black Friday guidance makes the same point. Confirm your caching is configured for a store: WooCommerce’s developer documentation says to exclude the cart, checkout and My Account pages from page caching, and lists the cart and session cookies that a caching setup can be told to bypass. And freeze changes: no major updates, new plugins or theme edits in the week before the sale, so that anything that does go wrong can be traced to traffic rather than to Tuesday’s update.

If your store has not been load tested or its checkout has not been reviewed this year, the checkout confidence checklist is a sensible starting point, and performance problems that show up as slow interaction rather than slow loading are covered in our article on INP on WordPress.

Summary

  • Black Friday 2026 is 27/11/2026, but buying now spreads across the surrounding weeks. Configure for a period, not a day.
  • WooCommerce core already handles scheduled sale prices, rule-based coupons, free shipping thresholds, cross-sells and an On Sale collection. Set these up first.
  • Retailers name card declines as the biggest cause of abandonment. More payment options, including buy now, pay later and wallets, recover sales that discounts cannot.
  • Pay for extensions only where core falls short: automatic discounts, bundles, abandoned cart recovery, gift cards and back-in-stock alerts.
  • Was and now prices, stock claims and countdown timers must be true. The Consumer Protection Act is specific about price comparisons.
  • Confirm hosting limits, exclude cart and checkout from caching, and freeze changes in the final week.

The stores that do best over Black Friday are rarely the ones with the loudest promotion. They are the ones where a shopper who decides to buy actually can.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Black Friday 2026 in South Africa?

Black Friday 2026 falls on Friday 27 November 2026, and Cyber Monday on Monday 30 November 2026. Many South African retailers now run promotions across the whole of November rather than on a single day.

Can WooCommerce schedule a Black Friday sale automatically?

Yes. Each product’s sale price can be scheduled with a start and end date in the product’s General tab, and coupons can be scheduled to publish later and given an expiry date. WooCommerce documents that a coupon cannot be used on its expiry date, so set it to the day after the sale ends. This lets a store load the sale in advance and have it switch on and off without manual edits.

Does WooCommerce apply discounts without a coupon code?

Partly. Scheduled sale prices apply automatically with no code. Core coupons, however, require the shopper to enter a code, so rule-based cart discounts such as quantity or category deals need an extension like Dynamic Pricing, one of the few Black Friday add-ons worth paying for.

Is it legal to show a “was” price on a Black Friday sale in South Africa?

Yes, provided the comparison is genuine. Sections 29 and 41 of the Consumer Protection Act prohibit misleading price comparisons and false claims of a price advantage. Keep a dated record of your regular prices before the sale and only discount from them. This is not legal advice.

Should I add buy now, pay later before Black Friday?

For most South African stores, yes. Buy now, pay later value through Peach Payments rose sharply over Black Friday 2025, and Payflex is now available inside Payfast checkout. Treat it as a way to convert more shoppers rather than a guaranteed increase in basket size.

How do I stop my WooCommerce store slowing down on Black Friday?

Confirm your hosting resource limits with your host, exclude the cart, checkout and account pages and WooCommerce cart cookies from page caching, and avoid installing or updating anything in the final week before the sale.
